TERRACINA 5 things you can’t miss

Terracina is located on the so-called Ulysses Riviera. Although this an area if full of things to see, today we will focus on what you really cannot miss in Terracina.

Temple of Jupiter Anxur

When visiting Terracina, you simply must visit Mount Sant'Angelo. This is where the Temple of Jupiter is located – a very fascinating archaeological site that will catapult you to a magical place.

Although not much is left of the original temple, it is not difficult to imagine what magnificence these places were in the past. You can reach the mountain by following a numbered path; and from the top, you can enjoy a truly unique view, overlooking the sea.

Terracina Cathedral

Also worth seeing is the Terracina Cathedral, located right in the historic center. You can admire it during a walk through the historic center, perhaps at night, while enjoying a delicious ice cream. The Cathedral is located in the Town Hall Square, and has early Christian origins. Some elements of Roman buildings, such as the columns, were used in its construction. The walls and floors are the original ones.

A special detail of this building is the "suspended" bell tower that does not rest directly on the ground, but is supported by huge pillars.

Forum Emiliano

In the upper town of Terracina is the so-called Forum Emiliano. It is so named in honor of the magistrate who had it built: Aulus Aemilius.

The flooring is still the original one. In ancient times, this was the center of the city. Business and religious activities were conducted here.

During World War II, the Forum Emiliano was bombed and part of the Roman Theater, the Capitolium, the Quadrifrontal Arch, and the forensic section of the Appia Antica came to light.

Church of the Purgatorio

The Church of the Purgatorio is also located in the old part of Terracina. It is a beautiful Baroque building, decorated with skulls and overlooking the ancient Appia Claudia. Leaving the main street, going up the city walls, you can admire the hemispherical red dome.

The fried paranza

Another staple when you visit Terracina is the fried paranza, especially during a walk, served in a yellow paper cone. For anyone not familiar with it, a fried paranza includes shrimp, squid, and mixed minnows. Fried fish is crispy and golden on the outside, and soft on the inside. It is sure to please young and old alike.

What about you, have you already booked your vacation in Terracina?
